2014 William Alburger Functional Wood Artist, Day One- Nathan

April 7, 2014

Today I started my internship with William Alburger, an artisan who works with recycled and weathered wood from barns and other buildings and wood from the forest floor.

We started out the day by going over some basic safety precautions and then got right to work. We went to one of his many wood piles and got about ten large boards. William cut the boards down a bit and then CJ and I sanded them. Then, we helped cut the boards into 10 inch by 10 inch squares. These squares are going to be part of a project that we will complete by the end of the internship. We did this same process with smaller boards which we also planed down to take off their roughness.

After lunch we worked with William’s wife on the business side of things. She explained to us that William takes his work to art shows around the country to sell it. She showed us how to update his website and also we researched some art shows to see if they were good places for William to sell his art.
