2013 Yellow Springs Farm Day Two -Rosalie

Day 2, April 9: Yellow Springs Farm

Today we didn't milk the goats, instead we mucked out the kids' stall. We had to put all the baby goats into another stall and then muck out their stall. After we did that, we went over to the barn on Hollow Road (where more kids and a few does are kept).

When we got there, we saw that one of the pregnant does had had two babies over night! We helped guide the little goats to their mamma's tit, so that they could drink her milk. After we made sure that the babies were okay, we had to feed the other kids. There are about 25 kids. We had to guide all of them out of the barn so we could feed them using the milk bars.  Once the kids were fed, we led them into the field, and we began mucking out.

Our next job was cutting the kids' nails. This was totally new for us, and took some time to get used to. Even though we only managed to get a few goats done, it was really fun learning how to do it.

After lunch, we returned to the farm on Hollow Road. We had to muck out a couple of the stalls and put new bedding down. We then brought in the kids, and fed them once more for the day.

The last thing we had to do, was bring back a little buck kid for a family who was buying him! As soon as we took him away from his mom, we could see that he grew sad right away as well as his mom.
