Day 3, April 10: Yellow Springs Farm
Today, again, we didn't milk. The first
thing we did, after feeding the kids, was move the two bucks to a lower pen,
and move the kids to the pen where the bucks were. This way, the kids could be
outside, in the grass. We had to teach the kids to drink water out of their
bucket because its so hot out and a few of them were panting really hard! After
the kids were stabilized, we headed over to the barn on Hollow road.
Once at the other barn, we first fed all the does who
were in their stalls with their kids. We had to give them hay, grain, and
water. Next, it was time to feed the kids.Another doe had given birth last
night. I had to guide the little newborn to his mamma's tit so that he could
eat! He's so skinny and fragile but so, so cute! We then mucked out all the
stalls in the side of the barn where the pregnant does are.
After lunch, we did more mucking out. We also tried
to get the kids to run out into the field instead of just huddling together on
the cement. Since these kids don't have their moms to show them and teach them
what to do, we have to be the ones to do it. After a few days of trying, the
kids are finally running into the field and eating the grass!
Before we left the barn on Hollow Road, we had to take car of a pregnant doe's, Clementine, foot. After that, we went into the stall with the newborn kid, and helped him get some milk from his mom. We then headed home.
It was a long and hot day, but seemed to whiz by
rather fast!
